Amazon Fresh… is it worth it?

AmazonFresh is one of the newest additions to the Amazon ecosystem. It’s a hybrid between the grocery store and meal kits like Blue Apron. You can skip the grocery store and have quality ingredients delivered to your doorstep but you do have to plan what meals you’d like to prepare.

Amazon Fresh is billed┬áseparately from your Prime membership. It is $14.99 per month on top of the $10.99 month Prime fee for a total of $25.98 per month for both services. If you pay annually for Prime, you’ll be billed the standard $99 per year plus $14.99 per month for Fresh. What groceries can I get on Amazon?

Now that you’ve signed up for your free trial, I’m sure you’re ready to place your first grocery order to test out the service. We took a look at the available options for the Washington, D.C. area. Here’s what we found:

Meat & Seafood

I’m not quite sure how I feel buying meat and seafood on Amazon. But they have it. And they say its fresh. At the time of writing this post, Amazon had 19 different items available for purchase in the Meat & Seafood section. Products ranged from bacon to burgers to pulled pork. Didn’t see any nice steaks – bummer. I personally would pass on this section and head over to the local market to grab these items.

Grocery

The “grocery” section contained a bunch of random items. Pulled pork again and a variety of chocolate. I wasn’t impressed with this category either – but I’d still sign up for the trial and try a few things.

Bread & Bakery

There were limited items in this category – but the cheesecakes looked tasty! Prices appear to range from $6.00 – $16.99 in AmazonFresh’s bread & bakery. Ouch!

Prepared Meals

Amazon has a variety of prepared meals. I’m most excited about the potential of these. The first item was a vegan┬áBaklava that has “the taste of layered filo dough with the finest nuts in the world and a hint of Mediterranean syrup and garnished with pistachio.” Interesting.

My favorite offering was their Garlic Herb Salmon. Clean, healthy, fresh, and tasty! Take a look:

Final thoughts on AmazonFresh… Is it worth it?

Personally, I would likely cancel Fresh after the free trial. The $14.99 monthly fee PLUS the expensive prices isn’t quite worth it for me. I prefer to select my own items at the grocery store.

I’m getting the vibe that I’m doing this review on an off night, though… There were not that many items available. Have you had better luck with Amazon Fresh? Let me know in the comments!
